“If you play before I say
Then I take it away.”
(Then they have to earn it back by continuing to “play” in the air.)
Discussed a little bit of grading philosophies.
Participation?
Pass at 70% vs. pass at 100%?
One teacher grades 80% participation 20% (easy) graded things

Keeping track of student progress:
- Seating charts are really helpful.
- It is super easy to have a chart for each class and make simply marks for students who aren’t getting a concept. When you mark only those who are not getting it and leave the spaces blank for those who do, you increase your efficiency in grading/assessing, and tracking that information.
- Skyward has a lot of tools for this.

5) Thoughts/Ideas about recorders
** For a detailed description of how one teacher (in Provo) is finding great success in motivating kids (particularly boys) to excel in recorder, and for a link to totally free, leveled music that she uses,, check out http://floatingdowntheriverontheohio.blogspot.com/. Linda Seamons told me that her kids get so motivated by her class system (particularly when she takes the kids’ pictures when they’ve passed off on their recorders and posts the pictures on the bulletin board outside her room), that all of the fifth graders end up getting their recorder black belts. |
6) Some other thoughts shared:
“When I started at my school, I did a collaboration with the junior high regarding what they wanted when kids arrive in seventh grade. So my 4th, 5th, 6th, curriculum is geared toward that. I do practice charts of 5 minutes a day or 20 minutes per week. Helps them prepare to be disciplined in JHS.
“Once the kids find out that I’m not going to give up on them, once their grade is low I will still help, then they will stay with me. “

7) Other Notes:
Some concerns were voiced about how often times they don’t get the note placement, even when we feel we are spoon-feeding it to them.
**(This might be in interesting topic to discuss in future collaboration meetings.)
